Flower Care Tips

Friday, June 25th, 2010

Depending on the flowers used in the arrangement, you can generally expect them to last anywhere from half to a full week with proper care.  By following these simple and easy to care for tips you can significantly prolong the life of your flowers.

  • Keep your flowers in a cool, temperate spot away from the sun, heaters, and electronics which may radiate heat and/or dehydrate the flowers.
  • Keep your flowers away from any air conditioning vents or fans, which may dry out the petals.
  • Use flower food, which can extend the life of your flowers by up to 50%.  You can pick this up at any local florist or at an online florist.  Some flower food can be quite expensive and can typically include additives to maintain ph and bacteria levels.  Most flower food will also need to be diluted in water.  Make sure to follow the instructions on the packet carefully, as too much or too little may not prolong the life of your flowers.
  • Make your own homemade flower food solution by adding 1 teaspoon of sugar and 1 teaspoon of lemon or vinegar to a pint of water.
  • Change the water and recut the stems by 1-2″ every few days.

Your flowers are a cherished gift from a loved one or friend.  Taking these easy steps to care for your flowers shows that you appreciate them and allows you to enjoy them fully for the longest time.
